About Jillian

Buckeye Band is coming back Fall 2021.  Introducing Jillian Nielsen, the new band director!

My band journey began in 7th grade when I joined my middle school band in Atlanta, GA. I started with the clarinet, mostly because my mom had played it when she was younger and I figured she could help me out. Even though I was a year behind all of my friends, I was determined to play in the top group. I practiced diligently and I achieved my goal by the end of
the first semester. I continued playing clarinet in high school, but then made the switch to bassoon. I enjoyed being the only bassoonist in my band and also enjoyed many opportunities to play in honor bands around the area. I participated in Marching band, indoor drumline, and winter guard throughout high school. Being so enmeshed in the band community gave me the desire to become a school band director. I attended The Ohio State University and received a Bachelor’s of Music Education with a focus on band instruction. After graduating, I taught at Calumet and Harambee Christian Schools here in Columbus. I was able to advance the band program by integrating the two schools into one band program. In 2013, my husband and I had our first child and I decided to scale back my hours teaching to stay home with her, and in 2016 I decided to stay home full-time. Since then my husband and I have chosen to homeschool our
children, which has been a great joy. I’m very excited to combine my love of teaching band with the homeschooling community in Central Ohio.
